Supporting Digital Nova Scotia’s Skills for Hire programme
Over the past month I’ve volunteered a couple of hours with Skills for Hire Atlantic, doing two 1:1 mentoring sessions with people on their digital skills programmes.
Skills for Hire Atlantic is a free, fully online, cohort-based training initiative that helps residents of Atlantic Canada develop the digital and professional skills.
It’s a simple format. An hour to talk about careers, roles, and what working in digital looks like day to day.
After being paired with two wonderful people; one looking at cybersecurity roles, and another looking to get back into data science work. With both we talked about things like getting started in the industry, finding confidence to contact people, and what organisations tend to look for when they’re hiring.
The conversations have been thoughtful and the feedback has been really positive. I’ve gotten load out of both sessions.
It’s a good reminder that giving someone an hour of your time can sometimes be genuinely useful when they’re trying to figure out their next step.
"Jon brought thoughtful, practical guidance to our Skills for Hire Atlantic participants. His ability to connect industry experience with actionable advice made a meaningful impact on learners navigating their transition into the digital sector."

If you work in digital or tech, mentoring like this is a pretty easy way to give something back.
I’m always happy to support initiatives that help people build digital careers, across Canada or wherever you are in the world. Get in touch to say hi.
